Architectural firms: ranked by 2007 L.A. County billings.EXECUTIVE SUMMARY THE 25 largest architecture firms in L.A. County reported aggregate billings of $683 million, up $53 million or 8.4 percent from the previous year. San Francisco-based Gensler was the only firm to surpass $50 million in billings, topping that mark for the second consecutive year. Twenty-one of 25 firms on the list reported increased billings in 2007. St. Louis-based HOK saw the highest percentage increase in billings. The firm reported $24 million in L.A. County billings, up $6 million or 33 percent from 2006. Kansas City, Mo.-based HNTB saw local billings jump by $5.6 million to $21 million in 2007. The industry has seen growth due to an increase in the number and scope of health care and education projects. Many hospitals have renovated existing facilities or built new ones to comply with a state law requiring seismic upgrades. In the education sector, many school districts and the local community colleges have been in a building mode, adding seats to alleviate overcrowding in schools. Overall, the 25 largest architecture firms employ 600 licensed architects and more than 2,000 workers devoted to architectural projects in L.A. County. --David Nusbaum THE PACESETTER GENSLER is atop the list of the largest architectural firms in L.A. County, with local billings of $59 million in 2007, up 5 percent compared with 2006. The San Francisco-based firm is responsible for numerous large projects throughout the county. It recently complet ed work in Century City on the 2000 A venue of the Stars build ing, which houses the Creative Artists Agency headquarters as well as ICM headquarters. It has also been hired by the developer of William Morris Agency's new Beverly Hills headquarters to design the building and the interiors under contract with the agency. In downtown Los Angeles, the firm is working on AEG's LA Live Convention Center hotel, which will include the Marriott Marquis and Ritz-Carlton brands as well as condos. "It's been long overdue for the city to have a large hotel downtown," said Rob Jernigan, Gensler managing director. Other large projects include work at the Port of Long Beach, Sony Studios, and new law offices for Latham & Watkins. "We've worked hard to diversity our base over the past five years," said Jernigan. "We are all nervous about the economy and where it's going to go." While Jernigan has not yet seen clients cancel projects, he has seen clients make delays in order to time their completion to favorable market conditions. "Clients are designing the building, getting it permitted and then looking at where the market is before pulling the trigger on the actual construction," he said.
