, in 1910. His formative years were spent on a farm in Connecticut, where he developed an appreciation and understanding of the nature of light. Finally moving to California, his sense of space and volume steadily grew. He can still remember the beginning of his career chronicling modern architecture. On March 10, 1936, Shulman photographed a home designed by architect Richard Neutra Richard Joseph Neutra (April 8, 1892 – April 16, 1970) is considered one of modernism's most important architects.

in Hollywood Hills. "I had no idea who Neutra was, I'd never met an architect in my life," Shulman said. "But as I walked around the house I saw certain statements I could make with my camera which delighted the architect."

These days at 95, Shulman is uncomfortable describing which of his photographs are his favorites. "My favorite has to be what I'm doing at that moment, because I'm assembling elements of the composition that ends up being very intuitive."
