Architects selected for Harlem trade center.

Gene A. Norman, president and chief executive office of the Harlem International Trade Center Corporation, announced the selection of the joint venture architectural and engineering team of Roberta Washington Architect, P.C.-Mitchell/Giurgola Architects and URS Consultants, Inc., to design the Harlem International Trade Center. HITC is a subsidiary of the State Urban Development Corporation.

The selection process began in October, 1992 when the Harlem International Trade Center Corporation (HITCC) and. the State Urban Development Corporation (UDC) issued a Request For Proposals (RFP). Nineteen teams of architects and engineers, involving more than fifty individual firms answered the RFP. One of the prime requirements of the RFP was the necessity of creating meaningful participation by Minority/Women owned Business Enterprises (MWBE) and the creation of joint ventures comprised of MWBE architectural or engineering firms was encouraged.

The joint venture team selected by the HITCC Board meets this requirement since it includes the MWBE firm of Roberta Washington, Architect, P.C., and the MBE engineering firm of Hardle & Associates, who along with URS Consultants, Inc., will be responsible for mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection design. Salmon Associates, an MBE structural design company, working in joint venture with Weildlinger & Associates completes the team.

The Harlem Trade Center, a $80 million, 600,000 square-foot mixed-use facility, with a construction cost $80 million, will be built on a state-owned site est of the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., State Office Building on West 125th Street in Manhattan. Plans call for approximately 400,000 square-feet of office space, a 75,000-foot multi-function conference/exhibit center with banquet facilities, business club, exhibition space and ballroom. A 100 room hotel, capable of future expansion to 200 rooms, retail shops and on-site parking for 700 cars are also included in the program.
