Architects pack a punch with Ali Center design.Following a weekend-long grand opening celebration in November 2005, which was attended by Lonnie and Muhammad Ali, family, friends, colleagues, and admirers from 12 countries and 32 states, the Muhammad Ali Center is now open to the public. Visitors from near and far are streaming to the Center to learn more about the three-time heavy-weight boxing champion and United Nations Messenger of Peace. Welcoming them to the Champ's hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, and offering them an inspirational experience organized to highlight the life and ideals of "The Greatest," is a dramatic new building by the New York City-based architect Beyer Blinder Belle Architects & Planners LLP LLP - Lower Layer Protocol . For Beyer Blinder Belle, the commission offered an opportunity not only to create a stunning addition to historic Louisville's downtown skyline, but also to build a structure that embodies the spirit and legacy of Muhammad Ali. "We made every effort to convey in this design the meaning of Muhammad Ali's life journey," Bland commented. The $80 million project is both a destination site and an international communications and education center, whose mission extends beyond its physical walls. With 96,000 s/f of space on six levels, the Center features 2 1/2 levels of exhibition space, as well as innovative educational initiatives and public programming.
