Architects complete restoration.


Following a meticulous exterior restoration of the seven-story landmark Beaux-Arts building known as Three on the Bund, internationally renowned architecture firm Michael Graves Not to be confused with Michale Graves.

Michael Graves (b. July 9, 1934) is an American architect. Identified as one of The New York Five, Graves has achieved his greatest fame with his designs for domestic
 & Associates has completed the transformation of its interior into a vital lifestyle destination.

Located on Shanghai's historic Bund, across the Huang-pu River from the city's Pudong financial district, the seven-story building features two floors of luxury retail, a contemporary Chinese art Chinese art, works of art produced in the vast geographical region of China. The architectural approach taken by Michael Graves & Associates for this project, respectful of the traditions of Chinese design, makes a careful distinction between bold new construction for new uses and that which is historically accurate.

The renovation creates an open, public image by reorganizing internal circulation and introducing a central Grand Stair. The walls surrounding the sky-lit Grand Stair are clad in translucent alabaster alabaster, fine-grained, massive, translucent variety of gypsum, a hydrous calcium sulfate. It is pure white or streaked with reddish brown. Alabaster, like all other forms of gypsum, forms by the evaporation of bedded deposits that are precipitated mainly from , creating a diaphanous shaft of light through the building.
