Architect of Original IBM PC Joins Philips Semiconductors; Lewis C. Eggebrecht to Head Up Multimedia PC Products Design.


SUNNYVALE, Calif--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 23, 1996--Philips Semiconductors announced today that Lewis C. Eggebrecht has been named to the position of chief architect for the Multimedia PC Product Group.

Eggebrecht directs a design team developing highly integrated ICs that drive multimedia PC applications. As chief architect, one of his main charters is to integrate emerging technologies developed by Philips into products that bring increased value and functionality to the desktop and portable markets.

"Lew's arrival at Philips Semiconductors is the first step in our next phase of investment and commitment to the multimedia personal computer IC business. He brings significant value to our projected growth plans and positioning with his knowledge, expertise and capability," said Jon Thompson, general manager, Multimedia PC Product Group, Philips Semiconductors. "Specifically, Lew has been chartered to develop advanced multimedia architectures that will take advantage of Philips' wealth of technologies."

Eggebrecht was the design team leader and architect on the original IBM PC. During his 14 years with IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) , he held a number of key technical positions with the company, and developed IBM's first Realtime RISC processor. He holds six patents, five of which are on the IBM PC. He is the author of numerous technical articles and two books, and was a contributing author to Peter Norton's 6th edition of "Inside the PC."

Eggebrecht was most recently a senior architect at S3 Corporation in Santa Clara, California Santa Clara, California (IPA: /ˌsæntəˈklærə/) , founded in 1777 and incorporated in 1852, is a city in Santa Clara County, in the U.S. state of California. , where he was responsible for the development of new graphics, video and audio architectures for a variety of products. Prior to S3, he worked for Integrated Circuit Systems in San Jose, California San Jose (IPA: /ˌsænhoʊˈzeɪ/) is the third-largest city in California, and the tenth-largest in the United States. It is the county seat of Santa Clara County. , as chief scientist, developing that firm's product strategies for all business areas.

Eggebrecht has also worked for Commodore International, Dale, Gesek, McWilliam & Sheridan, and Franklin Computer. He was the founder and president of Trillium Network Systems, a consulting firm that developed numerous networking products for clients such as AT&T, Siemens, MCI (1) (Media Control Interface) A high-level programming interface from Microsoft and IBM for controlling multimedia devices. It provides commands and functions to open, play and close the device.
