Archers stalwart Painting dies, 85.


LEAMINGTON-BORN Norman Painting Norman Painting, OBE (Born April 23 1924 in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire) is an actor who has played Phil Archer in the BBC Radio 4 soap opera The Archers since the pilot episodes were aired on the BBC Midlands Home Service in summer 1950.  - known to millions as the voice of Phil Archer- - has died following a long battle with cancer.

The 85-year-old was the longest-serving cast member of BBC BBC
 in full British Broadcasting Corp.

Publicly financed broadcasting system in Britain. A private company at its founding in 1922, it was replaced by a public corporation under royal charter in 1927.
 Radio 4's drama The Archers, first appearing as the Ambridge based farmer in the show's trial run in 1950.

Painting wrote more than 1,000 scripts for the show between 1966 and 1982. He also penned a bestselling book on the programme, and featured in the Guinness Book of Records as the longestserving actor in a single soap opera soap opera

In 2000, Painting revealed he had been diagnosed with bladder cancer bladder cancer

Malignant tumour of the bladder. The most significant risk factor associated with bladder cancer is smoking. Exposure to chemicals called arylamines, which are used in the leather, rubber, printing, and textiles industries, is another risk factor.
 but said it would not stop him working.

He remained active in the Leamington area right up until last year - offering his time to open a sheltered accommodation scheme, and a school's nature reserve.
