Bishop Wall was known and appreciated for his administrative ability, sharp wit and fine intellectual qualities. When he left Toronto to go to Winnipeg, Cardinal Ambrozic said, "All of us are profoundly grateful to Bishop Wall for the work he has done as a priest and bishop of this Archdiocese. His many years of leadership in both spiritual and temporal affairs have contributed to the vitality of our Church." It must be regretfully re·gret·ful adj. Full of regret; sorrowful or sorry. re·gret ful·ly adv.re·gret reported that Bishop Wall was not sympathetic to the pro-life movement, especially to its "political" efforts. Similarly, it must be reported that the Archbishop on several occasions, defended the Winnipeg Statement of 1968, which warped the consciences of so many Canadian Catholics in the matter of contraception. In 1998, in a pastoral letter in his Archdiocesan Catholic News, he said that "Your bishops were not in September 1968 and are not now in contradiction of Church teaching." That pastoral letter was ably criticized in an article entitled "Response to Archbishop Leonard Wall" (C.I., Jan/Feb 1999, pp. 25-26). The funeral Mass took place at St. Michael's Cathedral in Toronto. Internment was in Winnipeg. We should surely pray for Archbishop Wall and all our Canadian Bishops. |
