Tools Streamline Compliance Process

Arch Chemical will present a case study on this deployment today at the 2004 Responsible Care Conference at 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and again from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. The first discussion will cover RCMS Audits while the second will discuss the specific communications and stakeholder outreach requirements of Responsible Care and offer strategies, tools and case studies on how to fulfill the new requirements.

Since 1988, the U.S. chemical industry, through the American Chemistry Council, has implemented Responsible Care, a voluntary program to achieve improvements in environmental, health and safety performance beyond levels required by the U.S. government. The program has resulted in significant reductions in releases to air, land and water, major improvements in workplace and community safety, and expanded programs to research and test chemicals for potential health and environmental impacts.

Arch Chemicals deployed the QSi System for Environmental Management for its ISO 14001 implementations in Europe and the U.S. and is implementing an enhanced system worldwide as a method to ensure its facilities comply with Responsible Care requirements. Arch also used the QSi System in its RC14001 implementation at its Rochester, NY facility, which was certified in 2003. Starting in March 2003, Arch Chemicals instituted an expanded QSi System deployment at its headquarters to help manage corporate implementation of the Responsible Care Management System. Arch is preparing for its RCMS headquarters certification in 2004 and will be rolling out the QSi System to all of its 17 locations over the next three years.

Flexible Modules Streamline Management

QSi System for Environmental Management is comprised of a number of the same or similar modules that are a part of the QSi System for Quality Management such as Document Control, Training and Corrective Action. However, since there are a number of different requirements for complying with environmental and industry standards such as Responsible Care, the QSi System for Environmental Management contains a suite of 12 additional specific environmental management modules. The most important of these deal with Environmental Aspects and Impacts, Objectives and Targets, MSDS and Hazardous Materials, Emergency Preparedness and a Register of Legal Requirements.
