Arcada Advances Enterprise Leadership by Acquiring Sytron -- Acquisition makes Arcada data protection market leader on three major platforms: Windows NT, DOS/Windows, and now OS/2.

ORLANDO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 31, 1995--As part of a continuing strategy to provide comprehensive enterprise data protection and storage management solutions, Arcada Software Arcada Software was a computer software company that was formed in early 1994 by the merger of Conner Software (the software division of Conner Peripherals) of Lake Mary, Florida, and Astora Software, formerly Quest Development Corporation, of San Luis Obispo, California. , Inc. today announced that it has acquired the assets of Sytron Corporation, a subsidiary of REXON, Inc. Sytron is the acknowledged leader in OS/2 data protection, as well as a provider of NetWare, DOS and Windows backup solutions. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Industry analysts expect the acquisition to reinforce Arcada's leadership role in the market.

"Sytron's leadership in the OS/2 market strengthens Arcada's position as a comprehensive enterprise player enabling Arcada to better support its customers across a broad range of operating environments," said Michael Peterson The name Michael Peterson can mean:-

Rob Enderle, senior analyst at Dataquest Corp., a market research firm based in San Jose, Calif. said, "Just a few weeks ago we predicted that Arcada would likely become the leader in distributed backup market share. This acquisition takes that prediction much closer to reality." He went on to state that, "We attribute Arcada's success to its strong strategic relationships with Microsoft, Compaq and now IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) , as well as with other OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  and channel partners."

Before the acquisition, Sytron was working closely with IBM to provide tape services support in the next generation of OS/2. According to Arcada President Kevin Azzouz, that project will move forward under Arcada. He pointed out that the company already provides the backup applets in Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 3.1 and DOS 6.

"OS/2 support is important to our enterprise strategy and is a strategic platform for many of our customers," Azzouz said. "This acquisition shows Arcada's commitment to delivering a scaleable, integrated family of storage management products that protect data on any server or desktop the customer chooses."

Arcada has already made a strong showing in the OS/2 desktop backup market with its Arcada Backup for WARP software. The acquisition of Sytron now makes the company the clear market leader in providing data protection and storage management solutions for OS/2 desktop and enterprise network environments -- bolstering its already-established market leadership positions in Windows NT and DOS/Windows, as well as its strong position in the NetWare market.

"Arcada now offers the broadest range of data protection and storage management solutions for heterogeneous environments," said Azzouz. "This includes everything from client desktops to enterprise servers," he concluded.

IBM spokesman, David Marshall said, "IBM views the Arcada acquisition of Sytron as a positive move based on Arcada's reputation for superior products and quality support worldwide. We look forward to building a strong working relationship with Arcada and furthering the state of storage management in the OS/2 operating environment."

Arcada also announced a strategic alliance with REXON to provide software for bundling with the St. Petersburg, Florida-based company's Wangtek and Tecmar brand tape drives.
