FORT LAUDERDALE Fort Lauderdale (lô`dərdāl), residential, commercial, and resort city (1990 pop. 149,377), seat of Broward co., SE Fla., on the Atlantic coast; settled around a fort built (c.1837) in the Seminole War, inc. 1911. , Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 6, 1994--Arby's Inc. announced that it has opened its first unit in Qatar, three additional units in Brazil, and one each in Hong Kong Hong Kong (hŏng kŏng), Mandarin Xianggang, special administrative region of China, formerly a British crown colony (2005 est. pop. 6,899,000), land area 422 sq mi (1,092 sq km), adjacent to Guangdong prov.  and Canada, bringing to 25 the number of new restaurants opened internationally this year.

``We are extremely pleased with our progress this quarter,'' said International President Bob Briggs Robert L. Briggs (born January 12, 1941 in Amarillo, Texas) was an American football fullback in the NFL for the Washington Redskins. He played college football for the University of Central Oklahoma. . ``The pace of openings and agreements has picked up dramatically. We expect to announce several additional openings before the end of the year.''

The recent openings bring Arby's total number of international units international units,

to 164, including nine restaurants in Brazil, three in Hong Kong, 109 in Canada and one in Qatar. Most of the international growth this year has been registered in Canada, where eight openings have taken place and more are planned.

``Our goal, as we have stated, is to increase the number of international units to 1,000 by 1999. We are beginning to see real progress toward that mark,'' Briggs said. ``We have only recently put the support team in place to make our program successful. The increased level of activity is a result of those moves.''

Fort Lauderdale-based Arby's is famous for its premium, slow-roasted beef sandwiches which are served in nearly 2,800 restaurants worldwide. Ninety percent of the chain's units are owned by independent franchisees. Systemwide sales for 1993 were approximately $1.7 billion.
