The new unit, located in an existing Long John Silver's on East Main Street in Lexington, Ky., features menus for both chains. Customers can place orders at any cash register for both menus and are served by a common dining room. While Arby's and Long John Silver's share a site in Fogelsville, Pa., this is the first unit where the brands share a common kitchen and building. They plan to open another dual-branded unit in the Bluefield/Beckley area of West Virginia West Virginia, E central state of the United States. Last year Arby's parent company Triarc Cos. Inc., decided not to proceed with the acquisition of Long John Silver's. However, the dual-branding strategy developed by Arby's to build its store volumes and restaurant penetration remains in place. ``Despite the fact that Triarc withdrew its bid for Long John Silver's, we fully intend to pursue dual branding opportunities with Long John Silver's and other chains as a way to increase average unit volumes, penetrate underdeveloped markets and better leverage real estate dollars,'' said Arby's President and Chief Executive Officer Donald Pierce. Over the past 18 months, Arby's has engaged in an extensive test program with four dual branding partners in four different regions of the country in 15 Arby's restaurants: Sbarro's in Minneapolis; Mrs. Winner's Chicken in Atlanta and Fort Wayne Fort Wayne, city (1990 pop. 173,072), seat of Allen co., NE Ind., where the St. Joseph and St. Marys rivers join to form the Maumee River; inc. 1840. Each of the chain's stronger dinner dayparts complements Arby's busier lunch trade and provide menus which do not duplicate that of Arby's. ``The results of the test have been impressive,'' Pierce said. ``Average unit volume growth across all four regions quickly grew an overall average of 50 percent, allowing us to recoup our investment in each dual branded outlet within one year.''
