Arbor Software and DataMind Team to Combine Strategic Benefits of OLAP and Data Mining.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 21, 1996--Arbor Software Corporation (NASDAQ NASDAQ

: ARSW ARSW Annual Report of the Secretary of War ), a leading provider of client/server software for business planning, analysis and management reporting, today announced that it has joined forces with DataMind, the provider of software to Mine Your Own Business, to bring the benefits of OLAP (OnLine Analytical Processing) Decision support software that allows the user to quickly analyze information that has been summarized into multidimensional views and hierarchies. OLAP tools are used to perform trend analysis on sales and financial information.  (On-Line Analytical Processing (database) On-Line Analytical Processing - (OLAP) A category of database software which provides an interface such that users can transform or limit raw data according to user-defined or pre-defined functions, and quickly and interactively examine the results in various dimensions ) and data mining technology to business professionals.

The companies unveiled their plan for incorporating business modeling capabilities with multidimensional planning and analysis in a new white paper entitled "A Model for Effective, Customer-Oriented Market Plans."

Arbor and DataMind will promote the combined capabilities of the Essbase multidimensional OLAP Server and the DataMind Professional Editions so that customers can easily perform data mining functions on data managed by the Essbase OLAP server. This combined solution leverages the widespread popularity and power of spreadsheets as the leading desktop analysis tool.

Business managers in customer-centric organizations are challenged to rapidly build accurate, explainable profitability plans. For example, they might need to develop a customer-share planning model to analyze potential sales across customer demographics, or predict profitability of a product in a specific channel by applying product packaging scenarios. Compressed planning cycles and an increasing drive for organizations to gain competitive advantage demand solutions that deliver productivity improvements for managers to better understand, model and communicate significant relationships that exist in the data.

"Integrated data mining and OLAP using Arbor's Essbase multidimensional database See OLAP.  will provide customers with business planning capabilities unlike any others available," said A.J. Brown, vice president of marketing for DataMind. "The Arbor/DataMind solution is true OLAP combined with true data mining to offer the most comprehensive set of tools for making better business decisions."

"Predictive modeling tools align perfectly with Arbor's Open OLAP Framework by improving the understanding of information and accelerating the overall planning process," said Kirk Cruikshank, Arbor's vice president of marketing. "By integrating Essbase and DataMind, marketing managers will be able to analyze promotional effectiveness, understand the characteristics of profitable customers, develop promotional plans and monitor performance."

An Operational OLAP environment integrates the planning and modeling aspects of the decision support process with monitoring and analyzing performance against plan, so analysts can ask "What Happened?" "What If?" and "What Next?". Operational OLAP requires technology offered in Arbor's Essbase multidimensional database server to deliver "speed of thought" response, multi-user read and write access, large-scale data capabilities, user scalability and a robust analytical calculation. Data mining software adds a deeper level of analysis into the Operational OLAP model by automatically examining millions of relationships between data elements and presenting understandable results.

About DataMind Products

DataMind provides client/server data mining software for high-end analysis of complex corporate data. An easy to use interface provides business professionals the capability to automatically examine data residing on their desktops or networked data warehouses and identify important relationships that may not be obvious.

Unlike other data mining solutions, which are designed for artificial intelligence experts, DataMind's patent-pending Agent Network Technology produces easy-to-understand data models that require no initial training. Business users can view models through Microsoft Excel (tool) Microsoft Excel - A spreadsheet program from Microsoft, part of their Microsoft Office suite of productivity tools for Microsoft Windows and Macintosh. Excel is probably the most widely used spreadsheet in the world.

Latest version: Excel 97, as of 1997-01-14.
spreadsheets or Word files that explain data relationships in familiar terms. The same models can be used to either analyze data or predict scenarios, enabling users to fully understand their predictions. Users can also leverage the DataMind models to conduct more focused analysis and reporting through Arbor's Essbase server.
