: ARSW ARSW Annual Report of the Secretary of War ) today announced Open OLAP (OnLine Analytical Processing) Decision support software that allows the user to quickly analyze information that has been summarized into multidimensional views and hierarchies. OLAP tools are used to perform trend analysis on sales and financial information.  Framework, its architecture for delivering a strategic platform for OLAP (on-line analytical processing (database) On-Line Analytical Processing - (OLAP) A category of database software which provides an interface such that users can transform or limit raw data according to user-defined or pre-defined functions, and quickly and interactively examine the results in various dimensions ) across the enterprise.

Arbor's Open OLAP Framework is an open family of interoperable components which can be easily assembled to rapidly deploy adaptable OLAP applications across the enterprise.

In his keynote address at Dimensions `96, Arbor Software's International User Conference, Arbor's CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  Jim Dorrian explained that the company's strategic plan for delivering Open OLAP Framework includes maintaining its commitment to an open architecture, extending its partnerships, integrating third party technologies, continuing to evolve the Essbase multidimensional database server, and developing new application development products and middleware tools.

"As the OLAP marketplace goes mainstream, corporate customers looking for a `whole product' offering want an open, strategic platform that can address their enterprise-wide needs. Providing that platform is Arbor's guiding vision and what we intend to deliver for corporations worldwide," said Dorrian.

Arbor's Open OLAP Framework comprises the five product categories essential to delivery of a strategic OLAP platform:

-- Analytical Engine: a robust OLAP engine for data consolidation, aggregation and complex business modeling which scales to support very large data volumes and user communities. Essbase, Arbor's multidimensional database server is architected to provide this core functionality.

-- User Tools: Industry leading desktop tools, such as the recently announced Crystal Info for Essbase, an enterprise reporting system, address the diverse data access and analysis needs of users across the enterprise.

-- Developer Tools: "OLAP-Aware" extensions and objects which leverage market leading application development environments for creating custom OLAP applications. An example of this is the Essbase Web Gateway which enables the development and deployment of Web-enabled OLAP applications.

-- System Management and Middleware: data movement and system monitoring tools enabling large scale OLAP application deployment.

-- Application Modules: function specific components which provide pre-defined and pre-packaged capabilities for rapid assembly and deployment of OLAP applications.

Dorrian addressed an audience of over 700 Arbor customers and partners, stating that Arbor will be making a series of product announcements over the next six months addressing each of the five product categories in the framework. He referenced today's announcement of Crystal Info for Essbase as an example of how Arbor will complete the Open OLAP Framework by leveraging partnerships with industry leaders.
