Arbor Software Achieves Breakthrough OLAP Performance With Compaq; Essbase 4.0 Leverages ProLiant 5000 SMP Server Architecture for OLAP.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 3, 1996--Arbor Software Corp. (NASDAQ NASDAQ

Both internal Arbor and customer benchmarks operating under Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  show increased performance of up to 300 percent using Essbase 4.0 with the new Intel Pentium Pro processor-based ProLiant 5000 servers.

Arbor Software, Compaq Computer Corp., and Intel Corp. have been working together for over six months to test and optimize OLAP (OnLine Analytical Processing) Decision support software that allows the user to quickly analyze information that has been summarized into multidimensional views and hierarchies. OLAP tools are used to perform trend analysis on sales and financial information.  (On-line Analytical Processing (database) On-Line Analytical Processing - (OLAP) A category of database software which provides an interface such that users can transform or limit raw data according to user-defined or pre-defined functions, and quickly and interactively examine the results in various dimensions ) applications that will allow corporations to deploy dramatically larger databases, with unmatched performance, serving large user communities.

"Our Essbase product mix analysis application monitors the performance of 680 Carls Jr. restaurants on a daily basis. Our users want to expand the breadth of our application to include over two years of daily historical sales at a lower level of detail, so we need a system that can perform at very high levels," said Paul Wartenberg, business systems analyst at Carl Karcher Enterprises.

"The Compaq Pentium Pro processor-based servers coupled with Essbase 4.0 will enable our analysts to monitor our business in greater detail and respond to market changes more rapidly than ever before."

"The powerful combination of Essbase 4.0 with our new Compaq ProLiant 5000 server enables customers to deploy cost effective, enterprise-class OLAP applications," said Gene Austin, vice president marketing, Compaq Systems Division.

"The ProLiant 5000 running Essbase 4.0 provides excellent performance and availability for business analysis applications that support hundreds of users and hundreds of gigabytes of data."

Essbase 4.0 Leverages Compaq ProLiant 5000 SMP (Symmetric MultiProcessing) A multiprocessing architecture in which multiple CPUs, residing in one cabinet, share the same memory. SMP systems provide scalability. As business increases, additional CPUs can be added to absorb the increased transaction volume.  Architecture and Scalability

Enterprise OLAP applications such as performance reporting, sales analysis, profitability analysis, budgeting, forecasting and planning must support very large user communities. Essbase's multithreaded multithreaded - multithreading  architecture takes advantage of the symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) capabilities of the Compaq ProLiant 5000.

Essbase 4.0 uses up to 4 Pentium Pro processors in the ProLiant and provides near linear scalability. Running on the ProLiant 5000 with Intel Pentium Pro processors and Microsoft Windows NT, Essbase 4.0 delivers speed-of-thought response times from very large OLAP databases to large numbers of users.

"Our customers want multi-hundred gigabyte data capacity, robust analytical calculations and immediate response time for hundreds of users all on a single OLAP server," said Kirk Cruikshank, vice president of marketing for Arbor Software. "The Compaq ProLiant 5000 server in conjunction with Essbase 4.0 allows corporations to achieve this goal in a highly scaleable and cost-effective manner."

Availability

Essbase version 4.0 running under Windows NT on the Compaq ProLiant 5000 server is available immediately.
