TOPIC Cyber Security - Real World Threats
DESCRIPTION Network attacks are increasing in number and
complexity everyday. However, five years after the
initial flurry of network attacks, the greatest threat
still remains from relatively unsophisticated,
brute-force DDoS attacks. Until network operators
realize the necessity for forensic tools to detect and
trace these attacks, the proliferation of bots and
their many uses will continue to evolve at a
phenomenal pace. McPherson will discuss key findings
from a research survey conducted by Arbor Networks
which illustrates what the real world concerns and
threats are including DDoS, fast-spreading worms, BGP
route hijacking, and compromised infrastructure
network devices. He will explain how to mitigate these
attacks by deploying tools that provide a real-time
network-wide view of traffic and routing data to
proactively detect and trace network-wide anomalies.
He will also focus on how coordination and
communication within the global network operations
community are critical to defeating attackers,
regardless of the technology they use.
