WHAT: Anomaly Detection and Internal Security
WHO: Dr. Jose Nazario, worm expert and researcher, Arbor Networks
Dr. Nazario is a worm researcher whose interests include large-scale
Internet trends such as reachability and topology measurement,
Internet events such as DDoS attacks and worms, source code analysis
methods, and data mining. Jose is the author of Defense and Detection
Strategies against Internet Worms. He routinely writes and speaks on
Internet security in forums that include NANOG, USENIX Security,
BlackHat, CanSecWest and SANS. Dr. Nazario holds a Ph.D. in
biochemistry from Case Western Reserve University.
WHEN: Tuesday, May 3, 2005
3:00 p.m. EDT
WHERE: Internet2 is a consortium being led by 207 universities
working in partnership with industry and government to develop
and deploy advanced network applications and technologies,
accelerating the creation of tomorrow's Internet. The Spring
Internet2 Member Meeting brings together the leaders in
advanced networking to collaborate on and aggressively deliver
on the promise of the next-generation Internet.

WHY:
-- Institutions have spent millions of dollars to shore up the
perimeter of their networks with firewalls, intrusion
detection, and other defenses. The real threat for most
networks exists on the inside - where corporate assets lie
dangerously unprotected, vulnerable to insider misuse, worm
outbreaks, and availability outages.
-- The most effective method is to construct a network-wide view
of the entire network with auto-learning host behaviors to
determine which hosts communicate with each other, and how.
Using a network-wide perspective and relational modeling,
institutions can:
-- Detect and mitigate worms and other zero-day threats
-- Protect against network misuse
-- Provide comprehensive reporting to simplify compliance
-- Segment and harden the internal network against future
threats
-- More effectively address growing regulatory compliance
initiatives (such as HIPAA)
ABOUT ARBOR NETWORKS
Arbor Networks ensures the security and operational integrity of
the world's most critical networks. Arbor's solutions are based on the
proven Peakflow platform, intelligent technology for network-wide data
collection, analysis, anomaly detection, and threat mitigation.
Peakflow provides real-time views of network activity enabling
organizations to instantly protect against worms, DDoS attacks,
insider misuse, and traffic and routing instability as well as segment
and harden networks from future threats. Peakflow successfully
prevents costly downtime, network cleanup, and loss of customer
confidence. Arbor is headquartered in Lexington, MA, with a research
and development office in Ann Arbor, MI and overseas headquarters in
London and Beijing. Please go to: www.arbor.net for more information.
