Working with members of the international anti-virus and network security community, the CME initiative strives to reduce industry confusion in referencing malware threats while improving communication and information sharing See data conferencing.  across the information security community.

Arbor Networks joins other distinguished CME Editorial Board members, including those from the international network security community such as McAfee, Microsoft, and Symantec.

"The CME Editorial Board has been a tremendous resource for the CME initiative," commented Julie Connolly, MITRE's CME Program Manager. "The expertise of the participating companies is helping to ensure that the needs of the security community are met. MITRE sought participation not only by traditional antivirus organizations but also by others in the broader network security industry to help round out the expertise on the board."

Arbor Networks' Active Threat Feed (ATF ATF Molecular virology Activating transcription factor A cellular protein that stimulates transcription of adenovirus E4 transcription unit, which acts early in infection at any of several 'enhancer' binding sites ), which is the industry's only 24x7 service delivering behavioral fingerprints of emerging malware threats, incorporates CME identifiers that allow for unambiguous malware identification, thereby protecting networks against emerging threats.

"Arbor Networks is excited to work with the anti-virus community, MITRE and US-CERT to address the many challenges in fighting malware threats today," said Dr. Jose Nazario, Security Researcher and Worm Specialist of Arbor Networks. "CME will become a vital component of any timely, complete anti-malware solution, and we're proud to offer a unique, network-centric perspective to the board to help better define malware that threatens enterprise networks daily."

The CME Editorial Board approves which threats are assigned identifiers for publication on the CME Web site, and oversees updates to the industry mailing list An automated e-mail system on the Internet, which is maintained by subject matter. There are thousands of such lists that reach millions of individuals and businesses. New users generally subscribe by sending an e-mail with the word "subscribe" in it and subsequently receive all new . Board members, such as Arbor Networks, also are members of the CME Sample Redistribution Group, which discovers emerging malware threats. After determining that a threat is a high-visibility outbreak, group members upload to a secure CME Submission Server pre-analyzed malware samples, thereby allowing for further dissemination and analysis by other group members to help the community quickly develop and deploy preventative measures.
