Networks' Distributed Technology

An innovative early stage company specializing in managed availability services, Arbor Networks, has formed to help ensure that the Internet infrastructure supporting web content and service providers offers the highest level of availability, efficiency and security. The company launches one year after many of the world's most heavily trafficked web sites experienced devastating dev·as·tate

Arbor Networks has received $11 million in Series A financing from two blue chip funding partners, Battery Ventures and Cisco Systems, Inc. Arbor Networks was co-founded by chief scientist Farnam Jahanian and chief technology officer G. "Network availability and security provide the foundation for any organization doing business on the Internet," said Todd Dagres, general partner, Battery Ventures. "Arbor Networks is defining the critical new category of managed network availability services, the first of which is 'bullet-proof' distributed DoS protection. Battery Ventures sees tremendous growth potential in Arbor Networks based on its early leadership position, compelling technical advantage, the deep knowledge of its founding team, and the tremendous demand among Internet-centric businesses for distributed solutions that eliminate threats to network availability and performance."

"Security is one of the most important issues in the Internet Economy The Internet Economy refers to conducting business through markets whose infrastructure is based on the Internet and World-Wide Web. An Internet economy differs from a traditional economy in a number of ways, including: communication, market segmentation, distribution costs, and price. ," said Mike Volpi, senior vice president, chief strategy officer, Cisco Systems. "This announcement underscores Cisco's commitment to make the Internet a secure environment for anyone conducting business over the Internet and help companies maintain the availability of their networks in the face of DoS and other threats to network availability."

Arbor Networks' Market Opportunity

International Data Corporation forecasts that the operational services segment of the U.S. Networked Infrastructure Management Services market will grow from a base of $6.7 billion in 2000 to 12.9 billion in 2004 (IDC's, "Worldwide Networked Infrastructure Management Services Forecast and Analysis, 1999-2004"). Initially, Arbor will focus on preventing distributed DoS attacks such as the those that crippled Yahoo!, eBay and others, and which highlight the need to manage system availability.

"Ensuring broad network availability in the face of today's distributed threats requires a distributed solution that works at the core of service provider's networks, not just at the edge. Arbor's distributed approach leverages the existing infrastructure, which makes it easy for ISPs and web hosters to deploy, enabling new value added Value Added

Arbor Networks' Technology

Arbor Networks offers a distributed, non-intrusive, and complete managed service that proactively and in real-time, monitors, detects, traces, and filters threats to network availability. Purpose-built for carrier-class networks, Arbor's innovative solution generates detailed information about network anomalies to speed remediation with other web hosts and other service providers.  architecture, Arbor's system protects not only the edge of the network, but also the network core. As a result, Arbor's solution addresses not only Web site attacks but also threats to routers and other components of the Internet infrastructure.

Arbor Networks' tracing technology allows service providers to determine the source of an attack - whether a peer ISP, a customer link, a web host, or a collocated customer. By continuously sampling network traffic statistics, Arbor's technology establishes a dynamic profile of typical traffic patterns in different zones of the network. Sampling against this dynamic baseline allows the solution to flag anomalies. Once an anomaly is flagged, it is compared against Arbor's proprietary attack signature database to detect known attacks. If a match is not found, patent-pending technology analyzes anomaly parameters to pinpoint previously unseen, but nonetheless malicious activity. Finally Arbor's solution suggests an anomaly-specific filter to remediate the threat at the affected peering points.

The Arbor solution analyzes, traces, and filters potential threats to MichNet's network availability, performance and security.

"Arbor Networks has provided MichNet with a comprehensive distributed DoS and managed availability solution that allows us to control and manage distributed threats and disruptions," said Jeff Ogden, Associate Director at Merit. "Their offering, which resides at our major peering points for high traffic ISPs like Cable & Wireless, Qwest and Internet2/Abilene, was rapidly deployed across our network with no major re-configuration required. Arbor's DoS protection also allows MichNet to dynamically share information on potential threats or anomalies with our peering partners and customers in real-time, delivering further protection to our customers."
