Arakis announces successful completion of rainy season drilling program.

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 4, 1996--ARAKIS ENERGY CORPORATION reports that its wholly-owned subsidiary, State Petroleum Corporation, has drilled a series of locations during the current rainy rain·y

season. This year's program focused on drilling a total of four development wells proximal proximal /prox·i·mal/ (-mil) nearest to a point of reference, as to a center or median line or to the point of attachment or origin.

to the Heglig early production system. The successful completion of these wells allows Arakis to better optimize the production from these fields.

The Barki 58b well is located 4.2 km from the Heglig base camp, and 1.5 km southeast of the original discovery well, Barki 37d. The well was drilled to a target depth of 2345 m (7694 ft.). The main target zone, the Bentiu formation, came in 3 m (9.84 ft.) structurally higher than the original discovery well. Net pay was 14.6 m (48 ft.). This zone tested 1,000 barrels of oil per day on an 11 mm choke (jargon) choke - To fail to process input or, more generally, to fail at any endeavor.

, and had an above average productivity index of 7.1 bpd/psi. A 2.5 m (13 ft.) Aradeiba Sand was also tested in Barki 58b, and had a flow rate of 100 barrels of oil per day. The oil is 31.1 degree API (Application Programming Interface) A language and message format used by an application program to communicate with the operating system or some other control program such as a database management system (DBMS) or communications protocol. . The production capability is estimated at 1,700 bopd. This sand, presently called the Aradeiba 'E' Sand was not previously mapped and will result in new oil reserves Oil reserves refer to portions of oil in place that are claimed to be recoverable under economic constraints.

Oil in the ground is not a "reserve" unless it is claimed to be economically recoverable, since as the oil is extracted, the cost of recovery increases incrementally

State has also completed the drilling of the Heglig 87a development well. The well was drilled to a target depth of 1928 m (6324 ft.). Casing of the well has been completed and the Bentiu I zone was tested at a rate of 845 bopd. The productivity index for the zone is high at 18 bpd/psi. In addition, the Aradeiba A zone tested at a rate of 250 bopd. Production capability is estimated at 4,000 bopd. New reserves may also be booked as a result of this test.

West 45c, located 6 km southwest of the Heglig base camp, was drilled to a target depth of 2139 m (7015 ft.). Four zones in the Bentiu and Aredieba formations were tested. Results indicated recoveries of both oil and water in various zones. Given these results, the Kanga West 45c is not currently commercial. The well has been suspended for future engineering decisions.

The Kanga 46b well located 4.5 km southwest of the Heglig base camp, encountered the targeted Bentiu I zone resulting in a net pay of 4 m (13 ft.). This zone had a flow rate of 200 barrels per day Barrels per day (abbreviated BPD, bbl/d, bpd, bd or b/d) is a measurement used to describe the amount of crude oil (measured in barrels) produced or consumed by an entity in one day.  of oil, and production capability is estimated at 300 bopd.

Commencement of the 1997 exploration program is expected by mid December. Geologists have identified the El Saqr as the first exploration target to be drilled. El Saqr is located 25 km from the Heglig base camp. The structure is 8.3 square km in size.
