Arakis Announces Major Oil Discovery In Sudan.CALGARY Calgary (kăl`gərē), city (1991 pop. 710,677), S Alta., Canada, at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers. The largest city in Alberta and the fastest-growing major city in Canada, Calgary is a corporate, transportation, and financial , Alberta--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 23, 1996-- ARAKIS ENERGY CORPORATION reports that its wholly-owned subsidiary, State Petroleum Corporation, has completed the drilling of the El Toor 62a exploratory well within the Company's concession in the Republic of Sudan Sudan (s dăn`), officially Republic of Sudan, republic (2005 est. pop. 40,187,000), 967,494 sq mi (2,505,813 sq km), NE Africa. . The well, situated approximately 40km southeast of the Greater Heglig Heglig (also spelled Heglieg) is a small town in the West Kurdufan state in central Sudan, near the border to Southern Sudan. History The area was contested during the Sudanese Civil War. field area, was logged and cased to a target depth of 1897m (6222 ft.). Log analysis indicated that 19m (62.3 ft) of net pay was intersected in the targeted Bentiu I sandstone sandstone, sedimentary rock formed by the cementing together of grains of sand. The usual cementing material in sandstone is calcium carbonate, iron oxides, or silica, and the hardness of sandstone varies according to the character of the cementing material; quartz between 1649m (5409 ft.) and 1697m (5566 ft.) and a further 18 m (59 ft) of net pay in the Bentiu II sandstone between 1814m (5950 ft.) and 1837m (6025 ft.). The results of this drilling confirm that Arakis has made a major new field discovery and has defined a new exploration fairway parallel to the eastern edge of the Muglad Basin. El Toor 62a was located to test the Bentiu and shallower formations involved in a very large fault bounded structure paralleling the eastern edge of the Muglad Basin. The structure typifies a significant trend of up to the basin edge normal faults mapped throughout this area. This is the first of these types of structures drilled on the concession. Mapping has indicated 40.6 square kilometres Square kilometre (U.S. spelling: square kilometer), symbol km², is a decimal multiple of the SI unit of surface area, the square metre, one of the SI derived units. 1 km² is equal to:
The drilling rig has been moved back to the Toma South field to commence drilling the Toma South 21d confirmation well, which is a step out well located 3km (1.8 miles) from the previously drilled Toma South 02/9b discovery well, 29 km (17.4 miles) southeast of the Heglig base camp. The well will test the Zarqa, Aradieba and Bentiu sands on this 20 sq. km structure. CONTACT: Arakis Energy Corporation David Harrison David Harrison may refer to:
