Arab stereotypes.I was disappointed in Jim David's column in the February 14 issue [Friend or Foe?]. Perhaps he thinks it's funny to make a comment such as "Hmmm, testosterone-fueled gay Arabs: homeland security Noun 1. Homeland Security - the federal department that administers all matters relating to homeland security Department of Homeland Security executive department - a federal department in the executive branch of the government of the United States risk or really hot week-end?" But this type of comment is not funny. As a queer transgender transgender or transgendered adj. Transsexual. Arab living in the U.S., I constantly deal with hatred and discrimination. I suppose The Advocate doesn't think that any gay Arabs read the publication and that making such a flippant flip·pant adj. 1. Marked by disrespectful levity or casualness; pert. 2. Archaic Talkative; voluble. [Probably from flip. comment will be easily ingested in·gest tr.v. in·gest·ed, in·gest·ing, in·gests 1. To take into the body by the mouth for digestion or absorption. See Synonyms at eat. 2. , especially in our post-9/11 climate. The reality of the situation is that Arabs in this country and within the queer community are viewed as either terrorists or sex objects. Such a racist and objectifying statement in a publication that supposedly promotes social justice is unacceptable. LAMYA EL-CHIDIAC Oakland, Calif. |
