SAN JOSE San Jose, city, United States
San Jose (sănəzā`, săn hōzā`), city (1990 pop. 782,248), seat of Santa Clara co., W central Calif.; founded 1777, inc. 1850.
, Calif. -- Aptina Imaging announced today the launch of its new image signal processor (ISP) companion chip, MT9S311. The new ISP was designed to provide users with greater compatibility with Aptina's 5-megapixel (MT9P001, MT9P012) image sensors. System manufacturers can combine the MT9S311 with an Aptina 5-megapixel sensor to develop highly optimized cameras similar to SOC-based image sensors for a range of applications including surveillance cameras, camera phones, PC cameras, and digital video recorders. The serial (MIPI/CCP2) and parallel interfaces (input and output) provide greater flexibility enabling high definition (HD) video including 720p and 1080p for videos and previews.

Performance Focused Features

The ISP's image processing engine The image processing engine, or image processor, is - next to the optics and the image sensor - one of the most important components of a digital camera and plays a vital role in creating the digital image.  provides on-the-fly image correction and enhancement as well as on-chip JPEG JPEG

"The MT9S311 ISP companion chip is the most versatile, performance focused image processor available to Aptina 5-megapixel users," says Mansour Behrooz, Segment Marketing Director of New Markets. "SOC-like configuration of the MT9S311 and Aptina's high performance 5MP sensors removes compatibility and performance concerns when using third party ISPs. Optimized ISP/sensor operation coupled with Aptina's imaging expertise significantly reduce camera development cycle time," he adds.

HD Video

The MT9S311 is capable of advanced high definition video, normally found in larger, complicated or expensive ISP systems. HD modes such as 720p and 1080p in YUV The color encoding system used for analog television worldwide (NTSC, PAL and SECAM). The YUV color space (color model) differs from RGB, which is what the camera captures and what humans view. 422 or YUV420 formats can be implemented for advanced web cam See Webcam.  and security monitoring applications. Sharp details can be captured and processed in HD utilizing simple camera systems designed for consumer use. Aptina provides a unique SOC solution for HD applications when the MT9S311 is combined with Aptina 5MP sensors, like the MT9P001 and the newly released MT9P014.

Faster Time to Market

As a stand-alone SOC, users integrating the ISP benefit from Aptina's recommended settings and expertise with those sensors compatible with the MT9S311, saving valuable time and reducing time to market. The MT9S311 ISP companion chip is a good match with Aptina's market proven 5-megapixel MT9P001 providing users with a sensor/ISP combination requiring less testing and sensor adjustments to complete the final product design.

Availability

MT9S311 samples are presently available with mass production scheduled for September 1, 2008.
