AptarGroup expects lower second quarter results.

CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 17, 1996-- Carl A. Siebel, President and Chief Executive Officer of AptarGroup, Inc. (NYSE NYSE

See: New York Stock Exchange
: ATR ATR Achilles tendon reflex, see Ankle reflex ), announced today that the Company expects earnings for the second quarter of 1996 to be in the range of $.47 to $.51 per share, which is below the $.55 per share the Company reported in the second quarter of 1995. At the same time, Siebel expressed optimism about AptarGroup's future prospects.

The softness in the European fragrance/cosmetics market, on which the Company previously reported, continues to impact the results of the Company's major European operations. Slackened demand has led to lower unit volumes of fragrance/cosmetic pumps sold to the French fragrance market and continued price competition. Additionally, European profits for the second quarter of 1996 are estimated to be negatively impacted by approximately $1 million due to the effect of the strengthening Lira on inter-country sales. Sales for the second quarter of 1996 are expected to be slightly higher than the prior year quarter due to increasing sales to the pharmaceutical and personal care markets, partially offset by the decrease in sales to the fragrance/cosmetics market.

Commenting on AptarGroup's outlook, Siebel said, "Despite the anticipated decrease in earnings for the second quarter of 1996, we feel positive about AptarGroup's long-term prospects. Our pumps were on the majority of upscale fragrance/cosmetics product launches during the first five months of 1996 and we continue to work closely with our customers on new product introductions. We expect the fragrance/cosmetic market to recover and that AptarGroup will continue to lead the dispensing packaging systems market."
