Aprogenex announces European launch of genetic testing product; product includes marker to identify fetal cells and probes to identify the X and Y chromosomes.

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 13, 1995--Aprogenex Inc. (ASE (Adaptive Server Enterprise) A relational DBMS from Sybase that runs on Windows NT/2000, Linux and a variety of Unix platforms. ASE is a comprehensive and robust data management product with a long history dating back to the late 1980s. :APG APG Assists Per Game (basketball)

) Thursday announced that the AproProbe Plus assay, a research product that includes DNA probes to simultaneously identify fetal cells and analyze chromosomes within the cells, is available for sale in Europe.

The AproProbe Plus product is an extension of the previously launched AproProbe research product line, which includes DNA probes for the enumeration of certain chromosomes in cells obtained from amniocentesis amniocentesis (ăm'nēō'sĕntē`sĭs), diagnostic procedure in which a sample of the amniotic fluid surrounding a fetus is removed from the uterus by means of a fine needle inserted through the abdomen of the pregnant woman (see  and other types of samples, according to Joel Bresser, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer.

"The AproProbe Plus product is designed to distinguish fetal from maternal cells and to enumerate the numbers of certain chromosomes using the company's DNA probe technology," stated Bresser. "The product includes probes to identify cells containing fetal and adult forms of hemoglobin mRNA, providing a method of identifying fetal cells, as well as probes to identify the X and Y chromosomes."

When combined with an enrichment or separation system, such as the systems being developed by Aprogenex, AproProbe Plus should allow screening for fetal cells from various sources, including a mother's blood sample.

The AproProbe research product line may be used to enumerate abnormal numbers of chromosomes in various types of samples. In utilizing chromosome probes to enumerate chromosomes 21, 18, 13, X and Y, the procedure can identify disorders such as Down's Syndrome, Edward's Syndrome, Patau's Syndrome, Kleinfelter's Syndrome, XYY Syndrome, Triple X Syndrome triple X syndrome XXX syndrome, see there  and Turner's Syndrome.

The test can be performed in approximately 30 minutes and requires about 15 minutes of technician time.

Aprogenex intends to market the AproProbe Plus assay as a research tool to assist in the development of enrichment systems by others. Zeneca Diagnostics, a business unit of Zeneca Group plc and the designated distributor of the company's GenSite product, is expected to serve as the distributor for the product in Europe.

Availability of this research product in the United States will be restricted to the company's collaborators. The product has not been submitted to or approved by the FDA FDA
