April 30th History Channel Episode Features Taconic Rodent Breeding Operation.


HUDSON, N.Y. -- When The History Channel's Modern Marvels Modern Marvels is a documentary television series on The History Channel that answers the question of how many things in the modern world are possible, and where they came from.  series airs its episode on "Rats" this week, Taconic - one of the largest lab rodent producers in the world - will play a prominent role. , the TV segment includes an up-close look at how rats are bred in Taconic's advanced technology Isolator Barrier Units for use in biomedical research.

The Rats episode will take viewers through what is being referred to by the show's producers as "our love-hate relationship love-hate relationship Ambivalence Psychiatry A clinical complex characterized by Freudian impulses; love-hate is normal for children passing through the 'anal-sadistic' phase of development, in which there is often simultaneous love and 'murderous' hatred toward  with the rat." To demonstrate the valuable role these rodents play in research aimed at preventing and curing human disease, The History Channel film crew documented how rats are bred at Taconic's Germantown, New York Germantown is the name of three places in the U.S. state of New York:
  • Germantown (town), New York, in Columbia County
  • Germantown, in the town of Clarksville, Allegany County, New York
  • Germantown, in the city of Port Jervis, New York
 facility, one of the company's seven breeding facilities worldwide. Taconic erected a special Isolator Barrier Unit specifically for the filming of the episode.

The Modern Marvels Rats segment also features exterminators tackling rat infestation infestation /in·fes·ta·tion/ (-fes-ta´shun) parasitic attack or subsistence on the skin and/or its appendages, as by insects, mites, or ticks; sometimes used to denote parasitic invasion of the organs and tissues, as by helminths. , rats competing in the Xtreme Rat Challenge and the American Fancy Rat show, and a remote-controlled rat that may soon find itself used as a rescue animal.
