For specialists, nonspecialists, and graduate students, Cruz (Spanish, U. of Miami) compiles 18 essays on approaches to teaching Lazarillo de Tormes (1554) and related works of the picaresque tradition at the undergraduate level. Scholars of Spanish, literature, and writing from the US review editions and translations of the works, and critical and historical resources related to them, and discuss teaching Lazarillo in contexts such as early modern Spanish culture, the role of the church and the marginalization of Muslims and Jews, and current television shows, as well as through textual approaches such as textuality and stylistic analysis. Other essays describe teaching the picaresque to nonspecialists students, in interdisciplinary courses, and within the context of its influence on other literary traditions.
