A SINGLE mum who overcame all the odds to build a successful career in catering is in the running for a top award.

Debra Foster, a 40-year old single mum from Rhyl, has been shortlisted in the Modern Apprenticeship apprenticeship, system of learning a craft or trade from one who is engaged in it and of paying for the instruction by a given number of years of work. The practice was known in ancient Babylon, Egypt, Greece, and Rome, as well as in modern Europe and to some extent  Awards' Learner category after she turned a part-time waitressing job into a catering career.

Eighteen years after leaving employment to bring up her three sons she started a part time waitressing job at Pendre Coffee Shop in Prestatyn. She had left school early with no qualifications and had only limited employment experience, but her employer encouraged her to take a series of literacy, numeracy numeracy Mathematical literacy Neurology The ability to understand mathematical concepts, perform calculations and interpret and use statistical information. Cf Acalculia.  and food related qualifications through Deeside College Deeside College is a further education college situated in Connah's Quay, Flintshire, North Wales. It has recently received a multi-million pound makeover with a state of the art Learning Zone library, new coffee shops and A-Level centre. , where she recently won a student of the year award.

She's gained more qualifications since and has been promoted to sous chef.

"If someone had told me I'd be a finalist in the Modern Apprenticeship Awards, I'd have said they were mad. I never dreamed that I would get this far," she said.

Also shortlisted for an award is Colwyn Bay-based Coleg Llandrillo which has created new techniques to ensure its courses meet employers', needs earning it a place among the finalists in the Provider category.

More than 1,000 staff cater for 23,000 learners. By providing quality and choice for learners and employers, the college's work-based learning contract has grown from pounds 893,000 in 1997 to pounds 2.9m in 2008.

One of the keys to the college's success is the investment in state-of-the-art facilities and Internet communication technology, which ensures that learners, assessors and employers have remote access to the college and web-based learning systems at times to suit their needs.

BT has been shortlisted in the Employer category for its work in developing innovative tailor-made apprenticeships to suit the individual needs of its huge workforce.

Winners of the Modern Apprenticeship Awards will be announced next week.
