The man who established carmaker Nissan in the North-East has been appointed chairman of Trinity Mirror Trinity Mirror plc is a large United Kingdom newspaper and magazine publisher. It is Britain's biggest newspaper group, publishing 240 regional papers as well as the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror, People, Sunday Mail and Daily Record.  ( the media group which owns the The Journal and the Evening Gazette.

Sir Ian Gibson, 59, who lives in Whalton, near Morpeth, is a non-executive director of Newcastle bakery chain Greggs, engineering and defence group GKN GKN Guest, Keen & Nettlefolds (British global engineering company)

 and is the senior non-executive director of Northern Rock.

He is best known for managing the opening of Japanese car maker Nissan's huge Sunderland plant in 1985 and overseeing its growth into a site which now employs around 4,500 staff and supports more than 10,000 further jobs in the region.
