Appointment of Coulter signals new emphasis on corporate communications at WellPoint Health Networks Inc.

) has named Cynthia A. Coulter to the newly created position of vice president, corporate communications, it was announced Monday by WellPoint Senior Vice President, Patrick Garner.

Reporting to Garner, Coulter is responsible for corporate communications for WellPoint Health Networks and its Blue Cross of California and UNICARE operating units.

A veteran communications counselor with broad international experience, Coulter most recently served as senior vice president at Fleishman-Hillard (F-H) Public Relations public relations, activities and policies used to create public interest in a person, idea, product, institution, or business establishment. By its nature, public relations is devoted to serving particular interests by presenting them to the public in the most  where she headed the firm's corporate group in Los Angeles and Minneapolis.

While at Fleishman and Hillard, she was credited with successfully directing global communications throughout 60 countries for 3M's 1996 spinoff of Imation Inc. Previously, she was senior vice president at Hill and Knowlton Inc.

"Cynthia brings to WellPoint the level of professional corporate communications experience requisite to WellPoint's emerging leadership in the health-care industry," said Garner.

A Canadian national, now residing in California for more than a decade, Coulter's background includes corporate positions in the nuclear and waste management industries.
