Applying the lessons learned.
This is not a case of lessons learned on how to sell guns. This is a case of lessons learned about selling the right product to concerned customers. For those facing such crisis, or those savvy enough to prepare themselves properly, what guns should you sell?
For the prospective gun owner who is not yet into firearms, the shotgun is what survival experts most commonly recommend. Many citizens have used a scattergun to protect their families and property in the wake of disasters, riots and other upheavals.
Semiautomatic rifles also sold at record levels during the days following Hurricane Katrina. A reporter interviewing Morgan at Precision Firearms and Indoor Range, wrote, "Among the popular sellers at his store is the Colt AR-15, a 900-dollar semiautomatic copy of the U.S. military's M-16 rifle. 'We've been selling a lot. We sold a load of AK-47s, too, said salesman Tony Fazzio, standing in front of a half empty display case."
Remind your customers that when things got under control, the AR15 was the rifle that ruled the streets. Many of those cops had semi-auto AR15s, as did many of the security personnel--and, doubtless, many of the better-prepared citizens. Such firearms also are well suited to repelling SUVs and boats filled with armed "urban pirates."
There were, indeed, reports that heavily armed street gangs from other states swept into New Orleans, equipped with SUVs towing boats to get through the flooded streets for looting, and bringing with them AR15 and AK47-style rifles. When "snipers" opened fire on engineers trying to repair a bridge, the "black rifles" of the good guys made short work of them. Handguns also were used during the crisis. In The Detroit News, reporter Nolan Finley wrote, "Homeowner John Carolan ran off a mob of young men armed with knives and machetes and intent on stealing his generator by firing a few rounds from a .357 Magnum." When he unleashed the high-powered revolver fire, Carolan told reporters, the looters scattered.
Sometimes, the embattled citizens employed all three types of weapons when neither police nor soldiers were there to help them. This comes from a Reuters dispatch by Andy Sullivan: "A Texas woman who runs a Web site called Polimom.com served as a link between those who stayed and those who had left. With her help, they stockpiled an arsenal of shotguns, derringer pistols and an old AK-47. They were put to use the next day.
