Apply for internships at NASA, CDM and others by Feb. 1

DALLAS, Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Hispanic college students pursuing degrees in math, science, engineering or technology are invited to apply for more than $2 million in scholarship and internship opportunities through AHETEMS (Advancing Hispanic Excellence in Technology, Engineering, Math and Science), the educational foundation of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE).

Students may apply for as many scholarships and internships for which they are applicable. Deadlines range from Feb. 1 to April 1, 2008. Specific scholarships/internships

All completed applications for the opportunities below are due by Feb. 1, 2008.

CDM

CDM is a global, full-service consulting, engineering, construction, and operations firm helping clients improve the environment and infrastructure through award-winning projects. CDM and its subsidiaries, CDM Federal Programs Corporation and CDM Constructors Inc., have partnered with AHETEMS to establish a scholarship/internship program for a SHPE undergraduate or first-year master's student who has at least a 3.0 GPA, and who is majoring in an engineering, science, or construction discipline, such as environmental, chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical, structural, and geotechnical. After successful completion of the internship, participants will receive a $6,000 scholarship for the next academic year. NASA MUST

SHPE has joined the Hispanic College Fund (HCF) and the United Negro College Fund Special Programs Corporation (UNCFSP) to administer NASA's Motivating Undergraduates in Science and Technology Program (MUST). The competitive scholarship provides one-year financial support, up to one-half of tuition not to exceed $10,000, and a paid summer internship at a NASA facility. Additionally, students benefit year-round from tutoring, lecture series and mentoring.

The NASA MUST program targets underserved populations. Hispanic students are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants must be a rising freshman, sophomore or junior at an accredited university in the United States or Puerto Rico, have earned and maintained a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA, and be pursuing a degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. AHETEMS/NASA Marshall Space Flight Center Internship and AHETEMS/DOE Internship

The AHETEMS/NASA Marshall Space Flight Center Internship and the AHETEMS/DOE Internship provides qualified Hispanic undergraduates, who are U.S. citizens, the opportunity to conduct research at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (Huntsville, Ala.) or the U.S. Department of Energy (Washington, D.C.) for 10 weeks during the summer. Both of these competitive opportunities provide a stipend and up to $500 for travel to and from the internship site. More details and application information can be found at http://www.ahetems.org/. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc.

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. ("FCX") is an international mining industry leader based in North America. FCX has partnered with AHETEMS to award a scholarship/internship to full-time college students pursuing engineering or mining-related degrees. The award includes $5,000 and a paid summer internship. Navy ROTC

The Navy ROTC Program educates and trains qualified young men and women for service as commissioned officers in the unrestricted line Naval Reserve or Marine Corps Reserve. Eligible students must meet the required 3.0 GPA, have high SAT/ACT scores and take a required physical exam. This scholarship offers $180,000 for college tuition and books for any of 153 colleges nationwide. Students may major in any degree and can earn a salary immediately after graduation with a four-year service commitment.
