Applied Tactical Systems and Intermec Technologies Implement Bar Code Data Collection System at Dominion Power.

Business/High Tech Editors

EVERETT, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 19, 2000

Applied Tactical Systems (ATS) and Intermec Technologies Corp. today announced they have completed implementation of a radio frequency (RF) bar code data collection system at Dominion Virginia Power Dominion Virginia Power is a power company located in the state of Virginia. The company's foundings date back to the beginnings of the United States and include such luminaries as James Madison and George Washington.

, of Richmond, Virginia Richmond IPA: [ɹɯʒmɐnɖ] is the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia, in the United States. .

The system, which was designed and implemented in less than four months, allows the utility to gather and monitor greater levels of information throughout its central distribution center, reducing costs and increasing efficiency. The system connects Intermec Antares(R) handheld RF bar code data collection terminals to the Dominion Power SAP R/3 system through the ATS Universal Mobile Data Collector (UMDC UMDC Universal Medical Device Code (TM)) software. UMDC is the industry's first product that allows direct connection of bar code data collection equipment to SAP R/3. UMDC offers SAP R/3 users unprecedented flexibility in connecting to handheld and fixed bar code data communication terminal devices.

The Dominion Power plant in Richmond is a 31-acre operation that functions as the central distribution center for the utility's network of affiliate sub-stations. The Richmond plant maintains the equipment inventory required for all customer hook-ups, everything from spare parts Spare parts, also referred to as Service Parts is a term used to indicate extra parts available and in proximity to the mechanical item, such as a automobile, boat, engine, for which they might be used.

Spare parts are also called “spares.
, transformers and cable to the poles on which the cable and transformers are attached. The bar code data collection transactions that run in the distribution center include receiving and put-away, inventory control, packing and shipping. "We completed the system conversion on Nov. 11, the installation has been live since Nov. 13 and all systems have been working without any problems," said Steve Wooton, IT account manager for Dominion Power. "The key to its success for us has been that UMDC works in real time with SAP. Because of this seamless integration An addition of a new application, routine or device that works smoothly with the existing system. It implies that the new feature or program can be installed and used without problems. Contrast with "transparent," which implies that there is no discernible change after installation. , middleware was eliminated so there is no need for Intermediate Documents (IDOCs) and there are no `kick-outs'. This is important because it means that the inventory values are always in sync with SAP, and that substantially reduces our analysis time."

By using UMDC as the direct connection between the Intermec hardware and SAP R/3, Dominion Power will be able to significantly reduce operating costs. "UMDC comes with 25 starter transactions to facilitate training and transaction customization," said ATS Chief Technology Officer Dan McCabe. "By using these standard features within UMDC, Dominion Power was able to write all their own transactions quickly and easily." Additional cost savings are realized because the LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  administration is done at the corporate office. An entire database was eliminated, thus realizing a significant cost reduction in hardware and administration costs at the distribution center.
