Applied Innovation proposes Q-adapter consortium to develop interface between TL-1 and CMIP.

DUBLIN, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 21, 1996--In an open letter to network element (NE) and operations support systems Operations Support Systems (also called Operational Support Systems or OSS) are computer systems used by telecommunications service providers. The term OSS most frequently describes "network systems" dealing with the telecom network itself, supporting processes such  (OSS Oss (ôs), city (1994 pop. 62,141), North Brabant prov., S Netherlands; chartered 1399. A network monitoring and control standard from ISO. CMOT (CMIP over TCP) is a version that runs on TCP/IP networks, and CMOL (CMIP over LLC) runs on IEEE 802 LANs (Ethernet, Token Ring, etc.). ).

The rationale behind the proposed consortium is that the industry can share the cost of the development rather than each telecommunications equipment manufacturer having to shoulder the whole cost of the conversion for its own equipment. The overall cost to the industry would be less with the proposed consortium.

Applied Innovation has offered its services to act as moderator of the consortium. "Applied Innovation is well positioned to lead such a consortium, since we are a neutral party, not one of the involved equipment vendors," said Gerard B. Moersdorf, president and chief executive officer of the company.

Lawrence H. Corbett, Applied Innovation's senior vice president, said, "TL-1 to CMIP conversion could be done at the element manager layer in the form of applications running on a processor/computer located near the telephone equipment, typically referred to as network elements."

CMIP is an internationally accepted standard for network management, especially with layered network architectures such as open standards interconnection (OSI (1) (Open System Interconnection) An ISO standard for worldwide communications that defines a framework for implementing protocols in seven layers. Control is passed from one layer to the next, starting at the application layer in one station, proceeding to the ) and telecommunications management network The Telecommunications Management Network is a protocol model defined by ITU-T for managing open systems in a communications network. It is part of the ITU-T Recommendation series M.3000 and is based on the OSI management specifications in ITU-T Recommendation series X.700.  (TMN (Telecommunications Management Network) A set of international standards for network management from the ITU. It is used by large carriers such as Sprint, Verizon and AT&T. ). At this time, many NEs and OSSs are not equipped to use the OSI protocol for communicating monitoring and management data.

OSI and related standards describe the concept of a Q-adapter, which provides connection, translation, conversion and interoperability between the OSI and non-OSI components of the network. As a retrofit unit, this adapter would allow service providers to obtain the advantages of OSI architecture without the expense and time required to replace every system in their network.

As a component of future systems, a Q-adapter -- developed in the proposed consortium -- would enable the levels of interoperability and management intended in the OSI and TMN standards, and increasingly requested by telecommunications services providers.

Applied Innovation Inc. is the leading vendor of systems for networking NEs to OSSs in multivendor, carrier environments. The Dublin-based company designs and manufactures network mediation products that allow telecommunications service providers to manage old and new equipment in a single network.
