DUBLIN, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 20, 2000

Applied Innovation Inc. (Nasdaq:AINN AINN Artificial Intelligence Neural Network ) today announced that Mr. Robert L. Smialek has been elected President and Chief Executive Officer, and a member of the Board of Directors, effective today. Mr. Gerard B. Moersdorf, Jr., the Company's current Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, as well as founder of AI, will remain Chairman of the Board of Directors.

As President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. , Mr. Smialek will report to the Board of Directors, and will be responsible for the all of the Company's operations. Mr. Moersdorf will devote his attention primarily to corporate growth and strategic technology issues.

Mr. Smialek, 56, has more than 25 years of management experience leading complex technology and industrial businesses. From 1993 to 1999, he was Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Insilco Corporation, a $600 million diversified manufacturing company based in Columbus, Ohio. Insilco's major product lines are electronic components for the telecommunications industry, contract electronics manufacturing, and specialized components for the automotive and other industrial markets. Prior to joining Insilco, Mr. Smialek served as President and Chief Operating Officer Chief Operating Officer (COO)
