(TM)) Thursday announced that 2001 marked a year for process simplification and yield improvements in its Coffee Antioxidant antioxidant, substance that prevents or slows the breakdown of another substance by oxygen. Synthetic and natural antioxidants are used to slow the deterioration of gasoline and rubber, and such antioxidants as vitamin C (ascorbic acid), butylated hydroxytoluene  Enhancement Technology, a proprietary process that substantially increases the quantity of natural antioxidants found in brewed coffee.

AFS' simple and easy-to-implement technology is a 100 percent natural process that preserves the amount of antioxidants and is applicable to any roast level and bean type. The end result is medium roast coffee with at least 50 percent more antioxidants and dark roast coffee with at least 100 percent more antioxidants.

Green coffee beans are a rich source of natural polyphenols, which are powerful antioxidants. These antioxidants are also found in green tea and in other natural sources. However, many of the antioxidants found in green coffee beans are destroyed during conventional roasting methods, and darker roast coffees typically contain the least amount of natural antioxidants.

According to Loretta Zapp, chief executive officer of AFS, "Our extensive research and development has yielded a very effective 100 percent natural processing method that does not affect the taste and aroma.

"In fact, professional tasters, or cuppers, have commented that they can't taste a difference. All of the coffee companies that we are in talks with have independently verified our results time and time again. This technology is ready for market."

Presently, AFS is in advanced discussions with several large coffee marketers that it expects to initially commercialize its coffee technology. The coffee technology has met proof of concept with all potential marketing partners and marketing studies indicate that coffee drinkers are ready for coffee with greater health benefits.

The Coffee Antioxidant Enhancement Technology, which AFS refers to as CAET CAET College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology (Orissa University; India) (TM) internally, has been featured in Newsweek, USA Today, Prevention, and Parade.
