Applied Biosystems plans to purchase 80 acres in Pleasanton by year-end from Kaiser Aluminum Kaiser Aluminum (NASDAQ: KALU) is an American aluminum producer. The company was founded in 1946 by American industrialist Henry J. Kaiser. Kaiser entered the aluminum business by purchasing two government-owned aluminum facilities in Washington state. Corp. The East Bay campus in Pleasanton will eventually house about 2,600 employees, said Nick Wong, director of real estate for Applied Biosystems. The company employs about 2,000 people who will remain at the Foster City headquarters. "By expanding to the East Bay, we believe it will improve our chances to attract employees who might find it difficult to move to Foster City," Applied Biosystems spokesman Jay Rhodes told the weekly newspaper. Applied Biosystems develops and markets instrument-based systems, reagents, software and contract services to the life science industry and research community. Applied Biosystems manufactured the technology used by sister company Celera Genomics Group (NYSE:CRA See Community Reinvestment Act. ) of Rockville, Md., and by the Human Geonome Project.
