If Apple does pull out of the 34th Street site, it will be the second store deal to go south for the pioneering computer firm in recent months. The company was forced to pull out of a plan to build a retail location at 136 Fifth Avenue in the Flatiron District after local community opposition to the two-story glass design. Apple has two other retail locations in New York City--its flagship store at the General Motors Building involved a $9 million dollar build-out to create a spectacular 20,000 s/f, 32 ft hollow glass cube at the base of the building at 767 Fifth Avenue, and its Soho store at 103 Prince Street. Despite the rumors, Dan Pisark, vice president, retail services at the 34th Street partnership, said he was still hopeful the deal would go ahead. He said, "We were thrilled to hear [Apple] would build a store on 34th street. We all felt that the 34th street market was compatible with Apple's image, because the direction the street is taking is leading to a much younger-based market. "We're still hopeful that they will proceed. It's a wonderful space." |
