Apple elects Dr. G. F. Amelio to board of directors.

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 9, 1994--Dr. Gilbert F. Amelio, president and chief executive officer of National Semiconductor Corporation, today was named to the Board of Directors of Apple Computer, Inc. Delano E. Lewis, president and chief executive officer of National Public Radio, also was elected to Apple's board.

Dr. Amelio, who joined National Semiconductor in 1991, is credited with the successful financial turnaround of the company, taking it to the highest sales and profits in National's 35-year history in fiscal 1994. Under Dr. Amelio's leadership, revenues increased from $1.7 billion in fiscal 1991 to $2.3 billion with profits of $264 million in fiscal 1994, which ended May 29, 1994.

Dr. Amelio also refocused National's business strategies on "technologies for moving and shaping information," which the company defines as key elements in today's emphasis on using computers to communicate via the information superhighway.

Before joining National Dr. Amelio was President of the Communications Systems group at Rockwell International Corporation from 1983 to 1991 and had extensive experience as a scientist and engineer at Bell Labs and Fairchild Camera and Instrument Corporation. At Fairchild he also served as General Manager of the Microprocessor division and as Vice President and General Manager of the MOS Products Group. Dr. Amelio holds 16 patents personally or jointly and is co-inventor of the industry's first charge-coupled image sensor -- the type of device used in most consumer video cameras. Dr. Amelio is an IEEE Fellow and serves on the board of governors of the Electronic Industries Association and on the board of the National Association of Manufacturers. He just completed serving as chairman of the Semiconductor Industry Association and he is a member of the executive committee of the Business and Higher Education Forum. In addition, Dr. Amelio is active in numerous other associations. He received the National Management Association's Silver Knight of Management Award in 1988, and in 1991 he received the Masaru Ibuka Consumer Electronics Award for his work in the development of charge-coupled devices. Dr. Amelio earned bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees in physics from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
