The first stage of this alliance is a Software License Agreement signed by the two companies, which will see Apple bundle Zi Mail with Apple Macintosh personal computers in China and Taiwan. As part of the agreement, Apple has a non-exclusive license to bundle Zi Mail with the Mac OS Chinese version.

Zi Mail uses Zi Input, a Chinese character input system that is simple to learn and easy to use. PCWorld Hong Kong named Zi Mail as "Best Buy" for Chinese email software because it "provides the best Chinese language support" (March 1997 issue). Zi Mail was awarded a four star rating by PCWorld.
