Appian Offers AppianMode for Instant Resolution and Refresh Rate Customization; AppianMode is the Latest in the AppianXtras line of Multi-Monitor Support Tools.

Business Editors

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 19, 2000

Appian Graphics Since its inception in 1994, Appian Graphics was one of the leading suppliers of multi-monitor graphics accelerators.

The company was famous for its Jeronimo and Gemini product lines, and for the HydraVision display management software.
Corp. today announced the release of AppianMode, an AppianXtra that allows users to add new graphic modes to their system without specialized driver support. Users simply create a customized mode by entering values for the X-axis, Y-axis and refresh rate The number of times per second that a device, such as a display screen or DRAM chip, is re-energized. See vertical scan frequency and dynamic RAM.

(hardware) refresh rate
. AppianMode then uses the Video Electronics Standards Association's (VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association, Milpitas, CA, www.vesa.org) A membership organization founded in 1989 that sets interface standards for the PC, workstation and computing environments. Note the following VESA standards following this entry. ) Generalized Timing Formula (GTF GTF

) Version 1.0 to implement timing calculations and mode viability. The VESA GTF provides a standard method for generating general-purpose display timings.

"Many markets, such as public display, medical imaging and multimedia presentations require displays that run unique resolutions," explained Scott Lathe lathe (lāth), machine tool for holding and turning metal, wood, plastic, or other material against a cutting tool to form a cylindrical product or part. It also drills, bores, polishes, grinds, makes threads, and performs other operations. , Appian's vice president of marketing. "AppianMode is the only solution for multiple monitors that allows customized display support for displays such as 3:4 aspect ratio monitors and widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio plasma displays."

Quick, Easy and Flexible Mode Customization

"Appian's method of offering customizable resolutions within the parameters of the VESA GTF formula supports NEC's strategy for offering customers the advantages of 16:9 resolution within a standards-based environment," said Scott Evans Scott Evans may refer to:

  • Scott Evans (lacrosse player), lacrosse player
, Product Manager for NEC's Visual Systems division. "We find that AppianMode is a stable and reliable solution that allows our customers to use their PlasmaSync(TM) monitor in its native resolution mode without complications or loss of image quality."

Designed to allow users to display information in ways that best facilitate their unique display hardware or personal work habits, AppianMode enables users to develop and deploy new display formats that would otherwise be unavailable.

Users can create monitor-specific, non-standard modes (i.e. 800x1200 at 83Hz) and save up to 16 unique mode information for later use. These modes will be displayed in a list box and can be easily accessed from the Settings tab in the Display Properties dialog box A movable window that is displayed on screen in response to the user selecting a menu option. It provides the current status and available options for a particular feature in the program. . The saved modes can also be exported by creating a custom install disk for deployment to multiple systems.

Additional Features

Ratio--This function allows users to force the ratio between the X-axis and Y-axis values to one of the ratios in the list box. If the user locks the ratio and an X-axis or Y-axis value is entered, the other value will automatically be calculated. However, if a ratio is selected after the X-axis and Y-axis values have been entered, the Y-axis value will adjust to create the desired ratio.

Advanced Controls--These options can be accessed from the Edit Mode An operational state in a program that allows existing data to be changed.  dialog box via the Advanced button. The Advanced dialog box allows users to change individual timing values for the current display mode.

System Requirements To be used efficiently, all computer software needs certain hardware components or other software resources to be present on a computer system. These pre-requisites are known as (computer) system requirements and are often used as a guideline as opposed to an absolute rule.

-- PC platform with an Appian Jeronimo(TM)2000 installed

-- Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 4 or higher

-- Pentium class processor
