Appeal for witnesses.


Police are appealing for witnesses to an attempted robbery at Carey's newsagents in Heworth Metro station, Gateshead, on Thursday at 6.30pm.

A man entered the shop wielding an axe. But police say the alarm was raised and he fled empty-handed. He was described as white, 6ft, slim, wearing a dark woollen woollen

Metro off line

WEARSIDE Metro services are to be suspended all day tomorrow to allow Network Rail to carry out track renewal work.

Services will be suspended between Pelaw and South Hylton. Arriva Trains will also be affected. Metro operator Nexus will provide a replacement bus service serving all stations from Pelaw to South Hylton.

Hospital fears

Traffic alert

NEW traffic signals came into operation on Thursday at the top of Shields Road, Newcastle, between the roundabout at the top of the road and the junction with the Fossway.

Although the road layout is not complicated, drivers will be unfamiliar with these new signals and Newcastle City Council has warned motorists to take care when approaching them over the next few days.

Scribes event

AN exhibition of beautiful new work by the Northumbria Scribes opens at Alnwick's Bailiffgate Museum on Wednesday.
