It was one of a number of special needs charities in Newcastle that lost out after administration of the Children's Fund was handed over to local authorities from the Government.

The city council had decided that only schemes which worked to increase attendance at schools were eligible for funding.

After the Children's Fund pulled the plug on its pounds 27,000 annual donation to the Saturday Club run by the Edward Lloyd Notable people with the name Edward Lloyd:
  • Major General Edward Lloyd (1670-1718), Governor of the Maryland Colony from 1709 to 1714.
  • Edward Lloyd IV (1744-1796), his grandson, Maryland delegate to the Continental Congress
Trust, this meant half of the 24 children with severe disabilities could not attend.

Newcastle Children's Services have agreed to continue funding the other 12 places for severely disabled children. And last night she announced they are launching a huge appeal to generate revenue and save the scheme.

She said: "We will be approaching charitable trusts The arrangement by which real or Personal Property given by one person is held by another to be used for the benefit of a class of persons or the general public.  to try to get more money in to allow all those children who need it to attend.

"We have been in discussion with the Children's Services with no luck, so we've started to look at other forms of fundraising.

"I've had a lot of very worried parents who were unsure about what was happening.

"At the moment we are losing the ability to provide for a group of children with severe special needs and a lot of people are upset about it."

It was originally thought the entire scheme would be axed after the council refused to continue providing revenue.

But after a mass outcry, they agreed to provide half the funding, meaning three weeks will now go ahead.

The scheme provides a specialist environment for disabled children to take part in a wide range of activities.
