Appeal for calm following clashes in Martinique


The top official on the French island of Martinique has appealed for calm following violent confrontations with demonstrators in which shots were fired at police.

The Caribbean island's prefect prefect or praefect (both: prē`fĕkt), in ancient Rome, various military and civil officers. Under the empire some prefects were very important. The Praetorian prefects (first appointed 2 B.C. , Ange Mancini Ange Mancini (born June 15, 1944, Beausoleil) is the prefect of Martinique. Mancini served as the prefect of French Guiana from 2002 to 2006. On August 27, 2006, Mancini became prefect of Landes. In July 2007 he was appointed to be the next prefect of Martinique. , made a "grave appeal" on television "for all of the population to remain calm and at home" and said additional police had been deployed on the streets of the capital Fort-de-France.

 for over a month by strikes and demonstrations against the high cost of living, with a similar strike in Guadeloupe resolved earlier this week.

Violence first broke out Friday in Fort-de-France on the margin of a demonstration by farmers and businessmen against the strikes.

Tensions then boiled over in the centre of the city near the strike headquarters at the trades union building, with protestors throwing rocks and bottles at police, who responded with tear gas tear gas, gas that causes temporary blindness through the excessive flow of tears resulting from irritation of the eyes. The gas is used in chemical warfare and as a means for dispersing mobs. .
