Mukhtar Ahmed, 24, fought in the courts for two years to carry on driving after a conviction for driving without appropriate insurance in October 2006.

The father-of-one appealed at magistrates court, arguing he was new to the job and unaware of the need to hold a hackney Hackney, inner borough (1991 pop. 164,200) of Greater London, SE England, on the Lea River. His appeal was upheld, but this month Stockton Borough Council tried to get it overturned at Teesside Crown Court. The council failed, however, and were ordered to pay nearly pounds 9,000 in costs to Mukhtar.

His solicitor, Anthony Shillers said: "Mr Ahmed is a thoroughly decent chap who made a mistake, but the council didn't give him a chance. He has been proved right in two courts."

Mukhtar said: "I am so pleased that I have won the battle."
