"The Appalachian Trail is a beloved American icon," said David Startzell, executive director of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, previously known as the Appalachian Trail Conference. "But the trail faces new threats and needs constant attention to conserve its beautiful vistas, cultural landmarks and endangered species endangered species, any plant or animal species whose ability to survive and reproduce has been jeopardized by human activities.
