It is, essentially, a program that allows the user to observe an operation through simulation without actually running the program.  for pharmaceutical discovery and development, today announced that Apotex Pharmaceuticals of Weston, Ontario, Canada has licensed its state-of-the-art GastroPlus(TM) and QMPRPlus(TM) software tools.

Apotex is the first Canadian firm to license these programs, increasing the number of countries with Simulations Plus software to ten. Apotex will use the revolutionary software to evaluate the potential effectiveness of new chemical entities as oral doses in activities ranging from early discovery to late-stage development.

"We are very pleased to welcome Apotex to our continually growing list of customers," said Walt Woltosz, chairman and chief executive officer of Simulations Plus. "GastroPlus is the only simulation tool we know of that allows companies like Apotex to accurately assess the potential effectiveness and pitfalls of potential drugs as oral doses prior to extensive human trials. This can be crucial to not only selecting the best lead compound from several candidates for a particular therapeutic target, but even to making an important go/no-go decision for an entire project.

"It is an unfortunate part of drug development that most projects fail, and many because of problems in oral delivery. So the sooner such problems can be identified, the more time and money are saved either by some type of corrective action A corrective action is a change implemented to address a weakness identified in a management system. Normally corrective actions are instigated in response to a customer complaint, abnormal levels if internal nonconformity, nonconformities identified during an internal audit or , or by terminating a project that has no hope of succeeding. Forward-thinking companies like Apotex have recognized the value of state-of-the-art predictive tools to assess and minimize risks for acceptable oral delivery."

Apotex Inc. was founded in 1974, and is the largest Canadian-owned pharmaceutical company. From its two-employee, 5,000-square-foot beginning, the company has grown to employ over 4,500 people in research, development, manufacturing and distribution facilities worldwide.
