The now famous line "Houston we have a problem" has become part of the American lexicon. The Apollo Service Module cryogenic oxygen system failed. Lovell and fellow crewmen, John L. Swigert, Fred W. Haise along with Houston ground control thwarted a deadly scenario by modifying the Apollo 13 lunar module, turning it into a space lifeboat and getting all safely back to earth. This 1970 mission was dramatized in the 1995 Ron Howard film, "Apollo 13," starring Tom Hanks. In 1998, Lovell appeared in Hanks' HBO Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO)
