Apogee Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:APGT), a leading provider of digital audio amplification technology, announced today the release of the DDX8000, a multi-channel Direct Digital Amplification (DDX(R)) audio integrated circuit (IC). The DDX8000 combines an advanced digital audio processor with Apogee's patented DDX processing, supporting up to eight channels of high efficiency DDX audio amplification. The device's full range of digital audio functions reduce system complexity providing manufacturers a one chip processing solution for multi-channel audio applications, including DVD home theater systems, Internet audio players, powered speakers and automotive multimedia applications.

The DDX8000 is the latest in the company's family of DDX audio processor ICs. Its eight channel serial interface can be configured to accept most audio formats and sampling frequencies, including 24 bits at 192kHz to support DVD audio applications. The device's high performance 28-bit processor adds tremendous value and flexibility to any audio system. In addition to standard pre-amp functions such as volume and bass/treble, the DDX8000 provides advanced features including parametric equalization, programmable compressor-limiters, bass redirection, mixing and signal mapping to provide a level of capability that previously required a general purpose DSP.

The DDX8000 when used with the Apogee's high efficiency DDX-2060 and DDX-2100 power devices, can provide low distortion, low noise (0.04% THD+N at 1 kHz, 1 W, 100 dB SNR) audio power for applications from 10 watts to over 100 watts. In DVD playback applications it can be combined with three DDX power devices to provide either a 6x35 watt or 6x50 watt amplifier solution. For higher power applications, one DDX8000 can be used with multiple DDX-2100s to provide from one to eight channels of amplification at over 100 watts per channel. The device also includes two channels of DDX output to support a fully digital stereo headphone output.

The DDX8000 can be used as a stand-alone audio processor for a wide range of audio applications requiring equalization, output matrix routing, or mixing capabilities. The device includes five fully programmable parametric filters per channel, which can be configured to provide up to 20 independent filters in two-channel mode. The internal digital filter processing is performed at 192 kHz providing high accuracy equalization over the complete audio bandwidth. With DDX power devices, a complete cost effective solution is available for powered speaker systems with full digital crossovers and custom equalization.

Price and Delivery

The DDX8000 is priced at $6.48 in 1000 piece quantities. Delivery of production quantities of the device is expected in the third quarter of 2002. In order to support customer's development of DDX8000 amplifier designs, the company plans to release the EB-8000 evaluation board and reference design packages for a 6x50 watt and a 6x100 amplifier boards.
