Apocalypse: Beauty and Horror in Contemporary Art.

ROYAL ACADEMY OF ARTS Royal Academy of Arts, London, the national academy of art of England, founded in 1768 by George III at the instigation of Sir William Chambers and Benjamin West. Sir Joshua Reynolds was the Academy's first president, holding the office until his death in 1792. His Discourses defined the scope of the Academy. The king himself chose the original 36 Academicians and fixed the number at 40.

With attendance soaring and profits through the roof, 1999 was a boom year at the Royal Academy. Wedding the spectacular and the controversial, Exhibitions Secretary Norman Rosenthal's "Apocalypse apocalypse (əpŏk`əlĭps) [Gr.,=uncovering], genre represented in early Jewish and in Christian literature in which the secrets of the heavenly world or of the world to come are revealed by angelic mediation within a narrative framework. The genre seems to have arisen in Palestine in the 3d cent. B.C." ought to sustain the upward trend. Individual spaces will be given over to each of the show's thirteen exhibitors in this reworking of motifs from--saints preserve us!--the Book of Revelations. Artists include Mariko Mori, Mike Kelley, and Jeff Koons; the Chapman Brothers' giant swastika assembled from tiny figures will revisit their "Horrors of War" theme, and Maurizio Cattelan will show his recent sculpture La Nona Ora (Pope John Paul II hit by a meteorite). Let's hope the RA's lightning rods are in good working order
